During Apple's developers conference on Monday, the company unveiled iOS 16, its new iPhone software. The new lock screen customization choices hint that at least one of this year's new iPhones will include an always-on display, which has been available on Android phones for years.

Apple's iOS 16 software, which is now in development and will be released to the general public this autumn, allows you to customize your lock screen in a variety of ways. So you can immediately see the weather, your AirPods' battery state, upcoming calendar activities, and more. To turn on the screen on a contemporary iPhone, however, you must still press the power button.

However, if Apple includes an always-on display in its next iPhone, you'll be able to gaze over at your phone's new lock screen while it's sitting on your desk. For years, Samsung, Google, and other Android phone manufacturers have included this feature. Apple has been adamant about not including that option, perhaps to focus on improving battery life. Even if the screen is dimmed, an always-on display can steadily drain the battery.

Always-on screens are available on the Apple Watch Series 5 and subsequent versions, and they function wonderfully. Even if the screen isn't completely on or brightened, you can glance down and see the time, temperature, and some programs, such as maps, on the watch. It remains dim to allow you to use the watch without needing to flip your wrist to wake it up.

A next iPhone may function in the same manner, displaying critical information on the lock screen that you've decided to display without forcing you to turn on the phone's maximum brightness.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is intending to include it in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, the higher-end devices coming this autumn. As a result, it's possible it won't be accessible on the standard iPhone 14. However, it is possible that this functionality may entice customers to upgrade to the Pro models.
