Tabs are an essential feature of most web browsers. It might be difficult to switch between tabs and keep them organized, especially if you have a lot of them open. To assist you, we'll show you some useful Google Chrome keyboard shortcuts.


There are several keyboard shortcuts available in all online browsers that you may not be aware of. It's sometimes faster to keep your fingers on the keyboard than to move the mouse. Many of these shortcuts are also available in other browsers, but we'll concentrate on Google Chrome.


Google Chrome Tabs Shortcuts on the Windows Keyboard


The following shortcuts can be used on PCs running Windows 11, Windows 10, and even previous versions of Windows. These shortcuts work on Chromebooks as well as Chrome on Linux.

  • Ctrl+T to open a new tab
  • Ctrl+Tab: Toggle to the following tab
  • Ctrl+Shift+Tab to return to the previous tab
  • Ctrl+Shift+Page Up to move the current tab to the left.
  • Right-click the current tab and drag it to the right: Page Down (Ctrl+Shift+Page Down)
  • Ctrl+W to close the current tab
  • Ctrl+1-8 to go to a certain tab (From left to right, the tabs are numbered.)
  • Open the last tab that was closed: Ctrl+Shift+T
  • Ctrl+Shift+N to open an incognito/private window
  • Ctrl+N to open a new browser window
  • Open the following link in a new tab: Ctrl+click on the link
  • Alt+F4 to close the window

Chrome keyboard shortcuts on macOS differ somewhat from those on Windows.

Open a New Tab: Command+T
Switch to the Next Tab: Ctrl+Tab
Switch to the Previous Tab: Ctrl+Shift+Tab
Move the Current Tab Left: Ctrl+Shift+Page Up (Fn+Up Arrow)
Move the Current Tab Right: Ctrl+Shift+Page Down (Fn+Down Arrow)
Close Current Tab: Command+W
Go to a Specific Tab: Command+1-8 (Tabs are numbered from left to right.)
Open the Last Closed Tab: Ctrl+Shift+T
Open Incognito/Private Window: Command+Shift+N
Open a New Browser Window: Command+N
Open Link in New Tab: Command+click link
Close the Window: Command+Shift+W
